Timeless Art Nouveau French Chain in 18k solid gold. It is made of thirteen elegant oval links. Inside each link, a fancy swirly wire has been soldered. The wires are textured with milgrain, which contributes to making this piece a wonder of intricate details.

Details:

The chain dates from 1900s, Art Nouveau era, and is a typical French design. Such chains were often made very long, more than a meter. That piece has likely been separated to be worn as a single strand necklace. It is stamped with the Owl French hallmark for 18k gold. It also has a lozenge stamp, the maker mark.

The reason for the Owl hallmark is the following: when a piece of 18k gold is manufactured in France, it is stamped with the Eagle head. That stamp is added right after making a piece. If a piece like this one is for example modified, in present case a long 1m necklace separated in several pieces, the Eagle head mark may be lost on some pieces. Then an owl hallmark is added, to certify 18k gold, but later in the piece life, not at the making.
